A brief history of the School
Just after its establishment in 1901, Shandong University set up the discipline of literature. In the 1930s, the School of Literature was established in Shandong University, and a group of great masters, reputed scholars and writers such as Yang Zhen-sheng, Wen Yi-duo, Shu She-yu(Lao She), Liang Shi-qiu, Shen Cong-wen, You Guo-en and others converged on the school and increased splendor to the history of Shandong University. In the early 1950s, the School of Literature was transformed into the Department of Literature and started to enroll Chinese Language and Literature undergraduates and graduate students. Wang Tong-zhao, Feng Yuan-jun, Lu Kan-ru, Gao Heng, Xiao Di-fei, Lv Ying and other distinguished scholars taught at the School successively, further settling the academic tradition of the university. In 1994, Chinese Department was permitted "the base for national liberal arts disciplines personnel training and science studies" by the Ministry of Education. In 1995, Chinese Department started to enroll Journalism undergraduate students. In August 1996, the institution of School was resumed mainly dependent upon the Department of Literature. After the new Shandong University was founded in July 2000, the School of Literature was renamed the School of Literature & Journalism and began to enroll Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism, Communication , Advertising undergraduate students and Chinese Language and Literature, Journalism and Communication, Design Art graduate students and moreover, the School set up the postdoctoral mobile station. At present, the School has 43 professors, 26 Associate professors, 14 lecturers and more than 250 undergraduate students, 100 postgraduate students and 50 doctoral students enrolled each year. Processing perfect quality, strong working ability and wide adaptability, the graduate students are well accepted around the society. Great amount of graduate students are now working at various important leading positions or becoming scholars and experts.

Research and Administration
The School now has 9 essential research institutes of Chinese Language & Philology, Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern & Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literary Theory, Comparative Literature & World Literature, Journalism, Communication, Aesthetics and College Chinese. There are also relative teaching administrating and auxiliary bodies such as Administration Office, Office of the Party Committee, Office of Student Affairs, Office of the Communist Youth League, Office of the Undergraduate Teaching Affairs, Office of the Postgraduate Teaching Affairs, Office of Adult Education and etc.
Disciplines and Academic Research
Chinese language and literature is the traditional dominant discipline in the School. The Department of Literature, the predecessor of the school, started to enroll postgraduate students in the 1950s. When the State Council resumed conferring the academic degrees in 1981, the school became one of the first schools to be approved to award the master and doctoral degrees. In 1997, it was approved the first-level discipline to award the doctoral degree. The discipline of Chinese Language & Philology, as a whole, was listed into the “211 Project” key discipline constructing program of Shandong University in 1997. In 2000, the Research Center for Literary Theory & Aesthetics of Shandong University set up out of the discipline of literary theory was permitted the key base for humanities and social science studies of the national universities under the Ministry of Education. Since 1994, the discipline of Literature and Art has been permitted the State-level key discipline and Chinese Ancient Literature, Chinese Language & Philology has been permitted to strengthen the building of provincial-level key disciplines and Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature has been permitted the province-level key discipline. At the same time, the discipline of Journalism rapidly developed and constructed the “Training Center for Mass News and Broadcasting of Shandong University” together with Da Zhong News Group. The discipline of Design Art grew well and was permitted the provincial-level key discipline.
The school has solid academic strength and a strong academic team including many famous Doctoral tutors such as Zhou Lai-xiang, Yuan Shi-shuo, Dong Zhi-an, Zhang Ke-li, Ge Ben-yi, Qian Zeng-yi, Zeng Fan-ren, Guo Yan-li, Liu Nai-chang, Ma Rui-fang, Kong Fan-jin, Sheng Yu-qi, Tan Hao-zhe, Chen Yan, Niu Yun-qing, Xie Hong-xiang, Yang Duan-zhi, Wang Zhou-ming, Ma Long-qian, Xu Chao, Wang Ping, Zhang Hua, Huang Wan-hua, Zhang Shu-zheng, Tang Zi-heng, Wang Wen-cheng, Ji Fa-han, Zheng Chun, Yi Ping-ce, Sun Zhi-mei, He Li-hua, Liao Qun, Wang Xiao-shu, Liu Fang-zheng, etc. who all have had a broad impact on academic. Since 2000, there have been more than 80 publications of academic monographs every year, 200 papers published at the core journals in our School, and the achievements in scientific research have ranked in the forefront over the years. In 2004, the discipline of Chinese language and literature ranked fifth in the all-around assessment of national first-level disciplines.
The School carried out all kinds of academic discussions and communications. There has been “New Xin Tan Forum” and we invited well-known domestic and foreign experts and scholars, writers and journalists for academic lectures. Since 2003, we have held more than 70 forums; moreover, we have also hosted Large-scale international symposiums many times. Furthermore, the School has set up long-term cooperation relationship with 14 national key universities such as Peking University, Fudan University and Nanjing University, built stable academic relationship with universities at U.S.A., Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries or areas. The academic research improved the level of teaching. Four disciplines were elected to the National Quality Courses including Modern Chinese Internet courses, Chinese traditional literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature and Chinese Cultural History of Aesthetic. The school presses the academic periodicals Humanity Exposition and Modern Secretaries.
Students and community activities
Students actively held rich and colorful cultural activities on campus. There have been nine School class Students Associations which have hundreds of members and have formed a few high visibility of the brands in activities, such as Players Repertory Theater, Reporters Mission, Seal Society, Qing Jin Literary Society, Zhu Ri Poetry Society, etc. Each academic year, Players Repertory Theater rehearses two large-scale drama regularly and it has successfully staged “Thunderstorm”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Turandot”, “Han World”, “Love in a Fallen City”, “Li Bai”, etc. The students also combine their professional features and write some newspapers and magazines including “Spring Charm”, “Chase the Sun”, “Reporters in the Future” etc. The students in Chinese base classes hold “on reading” regularly.
